December, 2014 Meeting Report

Happy Holidays to All

We had a very good turn out for our Christmas sing along at the Willows. There were a lucky 13 players and a very full audience. Thanks go out to Walter and Barbara Roberts for organizing the event and printing up the program with a special thanks to BJ for phoning and emailing to keep us on track. Walter, Barbara, BJ and Cindy did a fantastic job with background information on the tunes. We now know where Jingle Bells originated as well as how to play a dreidel game. It was a fun day for the players as well as the singers. We are hoping to keep this momentum going into the new year . Our first practice will be at the Willows at 11:00 on Wednesday, January 7th. Come with some ideas of tunes you would like to have the group play.

Wishing you all the best in 2015, Happy New Year

October, 2014 Meeting Report

October blew in with two returning members and our nice steady group. We returned to many of our older favorite tunes; Old Joe, June Apple.... We actually enjoyed singing along to a few of them. "Yesterday's Treasures" really caught our attention with the beautiful words, and we'll be revisiting this tune often. Thanks to all who joined us this month and hope to see more of you in Nov.

September, 2014 BDC Meeting Report

Perhaps because of the beautiful weather on Saturday, only two (2) Club members, in addition to Bj Morgan and myself, made it to this meeting of the Bellingham Dulcimer Club. Too bad as lots of historical information about the Appalachian mountain dulcimer was provided, and several toe-tapping tunes were shared. Later . . .

More Regarding September, 2014 BDC Meeting

Actually, B.J. Morton and I will be co-hosting this next Club meeting.  Since I have not attended since April, BJ's assistance is essential - and very much appreciated!  In the hope that many players will attend this meeting, please be advised that I reserve the right to "change up" what we might share at the meeting.  Until 9/13, later . . .  Clay

August, 2014 Meeting Report

There were 6 brave souls who came out this month. We practiced some finger placements with running up and down the scale to warm up. We did attempt to get a little more practice with Nutfactory Shuffle and maybe ready to put it altogether next month. Then, we had a nice time of playing some familiar tunes. Until next month, keep strummin'!

July, 2014 Meeting Report

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and 4 of us played a round of club tunes. There is always something to learn about playing with a group; practicing chords, melody and harmonies etc. We would love to see more participation as we approach the fall; whether changing the time of day (Would morning be better?) or day of week, etc. Please let us know if there is an idea that you have to make this a better club.

June, 2014 Meeting Report

It really was a "June Jam " and attended by seven hearty souls with a new comer, Ed, who came up from Oak Harbor. After playing through our repertoire, I introduced a new version of "Cluck Old Hen", and we familiarized ourselves quite quickly to it, having a lively round. We played through many old favorites with about 4 versions of "Boil Cabbage". We are developing our Arpeggio playing and it sounds and feels so good! Along with the different strumming, we practiced blending tunes and using harmonies. Thanks to all who attended and looking forward to next month.

May 2014 Meeting Report

May brought a smaller group for our get together, 4 in all, but we had plenty of strummin time. After our warm up with the familiar tunes Gillian introduced "Yesterday's Treasures" by Sam Stone, a very pretty tune. After getting that under our fingers we moved playing some arpeggios for a familiar tune "Boil that Cabbage". We then revisited "Harrison Town" and many other club songs. It was a very enjoyable time even though we were so few. Hope everyone enjoyed their May celebration and will be back with us in June.

April, 2014 BDC Meeting Report

Darcy Fusch led a small group of us in some inspired mountain dulcimer playing at our Club meeting yesterday.  After warming up with "Happy Land", we moved on - pun intended - to "Farther Along" and then continued with "Streets of Laredo", "Crooked Ridge", "Old Joe Clark" and "June Apple".  Darcy's presentation regarding "thoughtful" - again, pun intended - fretting, including an insightful approach to "Mississippi Sawyer", was awesome!  There are some pics from yesterday's meeting posted at "Club Pics".  Check them out.  Later . . .

March, 2014 Meeting Report

It was a good Anniversary #5 meeting. We had 8 people attending and one of the club founders, Jerry Kramer. We had some snacks and soda provided by Darcy which we enjoyed during a break. It was good to break in the middle and visit with others in group, we will continue this format in the future. We reviewed our 3 songs, "Groundhog", "Farther Along" and "Crooked Ridge" and then held a bit of discussion on flat picking. This was another idea that maybe we could discuss some terminology each time so that we are educating ourselves along the way. Louise did a great job at introducing "Streets of Laredo". After break we had a song circle and a few of us played until 4! Thanks to all for participating and missed those who just couldn't make it this time.  Hope to see you all in April.

Tablature and Lyrics for "Groundhog"

Thanks to Jerry Kramer for sharing "Groundhog" with Club members who attended last Saturday's meeting.  At "Club Music", above, there are two (2) tabs, Jerry's and another for us "sight-challenged" folks.  The latter also includes an "alternate" fret (9 on the middle string) for folks who do not have an extra "61/2" or "6+" fret on their dulcimer.  Lyrics are also included.  Later . . .

February, 2014 Meeting Report

We had a good turnout for our February meeting: 7 of us and a few visitors. After reviewing our 4 tunes, Jerry taught us "Groundhog", a great quick tune which gets us to stretch ourselves into the upper range of our fret boards, so we will be ready to go for next February. We then called some tunes such as "Lynchburg Town",  "New River Train", "Fiddling Around with Bile", "Soldiers Joy", John Ryan's, "Butcher's Gap" and more.

Would love to keep this group growing musically as well as member attendance. We welcome all new and experienced players. Would like to explore new songs in different tunings and styles. So just let us know what your interests are! Hope to see you all in March.

Moved Away

Pat Madden joined the BDC in October, 2011, when the Club began meeting on 2nd Saturday afternoons at the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship.  I recently exchanged E-Mails with her and learned that she and Bill have moved back to Florida permanently.  Club members will certainly miss her joyful participation in our Song Circles.  Since the Maddens have close relatives in our area who they will likely visit from time to time, hopefully Pat can share a tune or two with us in the future.  Later . . .

January, 2014 Meeting Report

Thanks for all who made our January meeting.  We had a very nice turnout, 8 in all (considering we were competing with the Seahawks game). There was lots of strumming going on when I arrived early and we closed up shop around 4 or so. We must have played around 10 songs and just kept on until we were all well familiar with each tune; such a good song circle!

It was so good to have John and Margaret from Oregon.  Appreciate their effort to come and play with us as well as two newer players and thanks to Leslie, Colleen and Jerry for continued monthly support. John has two beautiful McSpadden Dulcimers for sale; it was such a pleasure to play such a beautifully constructed instrument. John also introduced "Farther Along" as our monthly new tune. I will be posting our new tunes on the website under music.

February is just around the corner so if you have a tune you would like to introduce let me know. We will have some heart-ty refreshments next month.
